The amount of time people spend on social media, video games, T.V, movies, and music is constantly increasing. Young adults now spend up to nine hours a day on social media for their own pleasure according to the studies from Common Sense Media. The study shows that 30% of all time spent online is now dispensed to social media interaction, 60% of social media time spent is facilitated by a mobile device.

To give a different outlook studies have shown that the average person will spend nearly two hours (approximately 116 minutes) on social media everyday, which translates to a total of 5 years and 4 months spent over a lifetime. Rightnow, the average person will spend 7 years and 8 months watching TV in a lifetime. Currently, total time spent on social media beats time spent eating and drinking, socializing, and grooming. These facts were provided by Social Media Today

Broken down, time spent on social media differs across each platform. YouTube comes in first, consuming over 40 minutes of a person's day (i.e. 1 year and 10 months in a lifetime). Facebook users will spend an average of 35 minutes a day, totalling 1 year and 7 months in a lifetime. Snapchat and Instagram come in next with 25 minutes and 15 minutes spent per day, respectively. Finally, users will spend 1 minute on Twitter, spanning 18 days of usage in a lifetime.

Fun fact for you, did you know the social media industry such as Instagram, Snapchat, and Spotify are attracting and engaging new audiences with such tools like “Live-Streaming”, “My Story” and “Listen to music anywhere and anytime” so you can show the people on your social media what you're doing 24/7. In 2017 social media ads spent up to $36 billion dollars on ads.

Now you may be asking, how could someone possibly be on social medias nine hours a day, so I went to the students here at Lone Peak and asked how and when they use social medias and what social media do they use the most. Here are some of the answers

1. What social media do you use the most.

I asked 30 kids what they use the most. 13 used snapchat, 10 use instagram, 1 used Pinterest and 6 used Twitter.

2. How do you have the time to use it all?

Multitasking is the answer. If teens are, on average, spending nine hours a day consuming media, it's not such a surprise they're often doing it during things such as homework. I asked 40 kids how they have time for it all. Half of teens say they use social media or watch TV while doing their homework. Some 60% say they text and more than 75% say they listen to music while working on schoolwork at home.

3. How can they access all this? The answer is, 'It's a mobile world'

Consider these stats: 53% of tweens (kids 8 to 12) have their own tablet , and 67% of teens have their own smartphones or other devices. Mobile devices account for 41% of all screen time for tweens and 46% for teens. This study comes from Common Sense Media.

Now this might be scary thinking that nine hours a day is spent on social media, but in some schools, such as graphic design, they have to use social media to promote their business. We can use social media to share the new inventions, expand our knowledge and what see people can accomplish. The social media is a way to contact with the world, we just have to remember to use it for the good.
