Getting the Most Out of Summer
By Lily Mueller
With summer just around the corner, it can be a bit overwhelming to try and plan out the summer while living in the stress of AP tests and finals. No need to worry though, this list will help you get the very most out of your summer.
Spend as Much Time Outside as Possible! Anyone living in Utah knows that the weather here is either boiling hot or a frigid cold, so live in the warm moments, get a little tan (but not sunburned), and drink up that vitamin D before it’s back to iced roads and elbow deep snow.
Explore! Summer is a three-month break from school where waking up early to get ready and staying up late to finish homework is nonexistent, so use the free time to see as much of the world (or Utah) as you can. Who knows, you might just find the Eighth Wonder of the World.
Do Something Outside of Your Comfort Zone! Summer is the perfect time to do something you’ve never done before. If you prefer to vacation in city areas, take a camping trip. If you enjoy staying inside where there is 24/7 AC, try spending the entire day outside. Whatever you are comfortable with, try going against the grain and doing something different. You never know, it could end up being something you love.
Get a Summer Job! Nothing is worse than spending summer without having a few dollars to get snow cones, so get a part time job to keep your summer coated in sugary, flavored ice syrup. Even saving a bit for the upcoming school year will help out a ton.
Spend a Day Away From Your Phone! I know, it sounds so incredibly hard, but you got this. A solid twenty-four hours away from your cellular device could open your eyes to seeing something new, and could show your parents that you’re responsible enough to not always rely on a phone, thus gaining a later curfew for yourself. It’s a win-win situation for everyone.
Visit One of Utah’s National Parks! If you go to Lone Peak, then you basically have a national park right outside your own backdoor, so what are you waiting for? Go explore! Going to Zion, Arches, Bryce Canyon, or Canyonlands provides the perfect landscape for seeing the best of Utah.
Find New Music to Listen to! With all the crazy activities going on during the summer, an epic summer playlist is a must, so create something special with new artists, albums, and genres of music to listen to.
Try New Food! Summer is basically three months of taste testing, so find a new restaurant or recipe to try out. Utah has hundreds of restaurants from all over the world for you to try and the internet has millions of suggestions, so any excuse of not knowing where to go or what to make is invalid. Go, try, and create!
Start a Journal! Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and Snapchat are great ways to document the best parts of your life for the world to see, but there is much more to everyone’s social media life than the pictures we post. Starting a journal could help document the ups and downs in life that we don’t always show on social media and keep the memories as vivid as the day they happened.
Don’t Forget to Have Fun! You have three months to do whatever you want, so don’t forget to have fun and love your break from school!
